Flight log

A Twin Otter in Flybe colours landing on the wet sand of the beach runway at Barra, throwing up spray

This is where our real flights will land: short write-ups with the route, the aircraft, the weather and what we learned on the way. The first entries are still being written. Until then, here’s what an entry will look like.

Example entry

Example only, not a real flight

A sunny Saturday in the circuit

  • Route: home airfield, local training area, back home
  • Aircraft: Cessna 172S
  • Flight time: 1.2 hours, 6 landings
  • Weather: LHBP 061430Z 24012KT 9999 FEW035 12/04 Q1018 NOSIG

Every entry ends with a short note on what went well and what we’d do differently next time.

How to read that METAR

That line of code is a METAR, the standard airport weather report. It looks scary, but it’s easy once you know the order:

  • LHBP: the airport’s ICAO code, here Budapest Ferenc Liszt
  • 061430Z: the 6th of the month at 14:30 UTC
  • 24012KT: wind from 240 degrees at 12 knots
  • 9999: visibility 10 km or more
  • FEW035: a few clouds at 3,500 ft
  • 12/04: temperature 12 °C, dew point 4 °C
  • Q1018: QNH, the air pressure at sea level, 1018 hPa
  • NOSIG: no significant change expected
